Financial Accounting Course (ACCT)
Financial Accounting Course analyzes the basic structure of accounting as it applies to the business environment. Fundamental concepts covered include: accounting concepts, financial statements, recording business transactions, measuring business income, accounting cycle, merchandise inventory, accounting information systems, assets, liabilities, receivables, current liabilities and payroll.
In the second part of this course students are introduced to more advanced accounting topics such as: partnerships, corporations (share capital and balance sheets), retained earnings and the income statement, long-term liabilities, investments, cash flow statements, and financial statement analysis.

Learning Objectives for Financial Accounting
- Utilize accounting equations to calculate and design financial statements
- Record business transactions (recording, posting, ledger)
- Prepare financial statements from the Adjusted Trial Balance
- Work through the accounting cycle to classify assets and liabilities
- Account for merchandise inventory
- Effectively use accounting information systems
- Provide accounts receivable services, including accounting for uncollectible amounts
- Measure the cost of property, plant, and equipment and intangible assets
- Demonstrate ethical accounting principles
- Compare and contrast different types of partnerships
- Calculate share capital and create balance sheets
- Analyze an income statement with respect to retained earnings
- Discuss characteristics of long-term liabilities and mortgages
- Analyze consolidated financial statements
- Utilize different methods of financial statement analysis

Other Admission Requirements
- Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency for domestic students
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have completed high school studies and/or commencement of post-secondary studies OR have achieved MATURE STUDENT STATUS: 19 years of age, out of secondary school for a minimum of 1 year with program industry experience minimum of 100 hours.
