Caregiver Micro-credential Courses

These courses prepare students to work as ECE Assistants in a licensed childcare facility. These courses can lead to a regulated occupation if students choose to register for certification. The regulator’s website is ECE Registry.

One of the requirements for working as an Early Childhood Educator Assistant in a licensed childcare facility in British Columbia is to be certified by the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Registry. The ECE Registry does not automatically recognize these courses offered by SELC College which means that upon graduation, students will have to apply for certification through the ECE Registry’s equivalency process by submitting a Early Childhood Educator Certification Application Equivalency form. SELC College will guide and support students in completing the process. For further information, the equivalency application as well as ECE A certification students can also visit the ECE Registry website.

**Please note that SELC College does not offer the full ECE program currently, however we are on the ECE Registry waitlist in line for the registry approvals processes so we can provide the entire ECE program in the future.

EC Learning & Childcare Environments

Upon completing this course, students can guide children’s behavior using positive, developmentally appropriate strategies while fostering communication and emotional expression. They will collaborate with parents and professionals, support strong caregiver-child relationships, and encourage social development. Additionally, they will facilitate decision-making, problem-solving, and community participation, while developing individualized service plans with family and agency involvement.

Child Growth & Development

Upon completion of this course, students will understand child growth and development theories from a cross-cultural perspective, recognizing key developmental domains, milestones, and individual differences. They will apply systems theory, demonstrate cultural competence, and implement inclusive, anti-bias strategies. Additionally, they will develop skills in observation, assessment, and planning while ensuring best practices in child care, confidentiality, and compliance with reporting protocols.

Health, Safety & Nutrition in ECE

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to plan nutritious meals, ensure health and safety through illness and injury prevention, and implement policies for medication administration and emergency procedures. They will create inclusive, developmentally appropriate environments that support diverse needs while maintaining supervision, hygiene standards, and confidentiality. Additionally, they will contribute to effective team dynamics, respect cultural and family diversity, monitor children’s health, and recognize personal wellness as part of professional growth.
