Live-in-Caregiver-Childcare
Students who take the LIC-Childcare program will develop skills in child growth and development, health, safety and nutrition, and positive guidance in early learning and child care environments.
Our program teaches students about working with children, child development, positive guidance strategies, and health, safety, and nutrition in the early years.
The fundamental courses emphasize professional caregiving practices, developmental theory, and the ethical responsibilities of being a caregiver.

Caregiver Certificate Of Completion Courses
Students can take a single course or all three courses and may be eligible to apply for ECEA certification through the ECE Registry. These courses are part of our Live-in-Caregiver-Childcare and Live-in-Caregiver-Childcare-Co-op Diploma programs.
However, please note that one of the requirements to work as an Early Childhood Education Assistant in a licensed childcare facility in BC is to be certified by the ECE Registry. The Live-in-Caregiver – Childcare program offered by SELC College is not recognized by the ECE Registry. This means that upon graduation, students will have to apply for certification through the ECE Registry’s equivalency process. (EC100) Child Growth and Development
This course introduces the student to theoretical concepts that support the foundation of their work as Early Childhood Educators. Students will learn how developmental theory guides their work with children, families, and communities. The student will explore how children grow and develop from pre-birth to adolescence. An emphasis will be placed on the early years, birth to five years old. The student will gain a clear understanding of developmental domains. The student will learn how to provide an optimal learning environment for children in early years programs. Students will connect theory to practice and refer to the BC Early Learning Framework and Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Principles.
Course Duration: 4 weeks; 25 hours per week
(EC 110) Health, Safety, and Nutrition in Early Learning and Child Care Environments
This course covers health, safety, and nutrition in early childhood education settings. Students will learn policies and procedures used in early learning and child care programs. Students will learn about health related symptoms and characteristics. Students will consider the importance and implementation of safety policies and procedures. Students will learn about nutrition and individual needs and preferences for children. Students will reflect on their personal wellness and the impact it has on the students’ work in early learning and child care environments.
Course Duration: 2 weeks; 25 hours per week
(EC 108) Positive Guidance in Early Learning and Child Care Environments
This course focuses on the practical use of positive guidance approaches in early learning and child care environments. Students will learn how child development, environment, and relationships impact children’s behaviour. Students will learn how to support children’s behaviours which may interfere with the child’s ability to initiate, maintain and problem-solve with peers and participate in early learning and child care programs. Students will learn about modifying the environment, activities, and social groups.
