Academic Excellence and Support
What I really liked about the program is that I met a lot of people from different parts of the world: people from the Philippines, Brazil and even people from my own country!
I am currently doing my co-op at a spa called Breathe Spa. It’s a very nice place to come to work each day. There, I currently help with the client calls, inventory management, treatment scheduling, cash management, etc. It’s a great experience as I get to apply the knowledge I learned during my SELC program into the workplace. I am also providing spa treatments for the clients, so I’m basically doing a bit of everything. I love my co-op experience, because I feel I am making a valuable contribution that makes me feel very proud of my accomplishments.
After graduating, I would like to stay in Canada and continue my studies towards an MBA post graduate degree. My experience at SELC will absolutely help me achieve my plan to achieve my career aspirations.
My SELC experience allowed me to practice my English in a more casual environment while making new friends from other countries. Early on in my term, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the class; however, the teachers provided me with excellent online materials and support that I could easily understand. I was really surprised how actively teachers responded to my questions - even after classes ended. This kind of support helped me effectively learn the fundamentals of internship, learning on the job and what assimilating into the workforce would feel like in Canada.
I’m currently doing my co-op as an administrative assistant at Yetmans Law Corporation, a real estate law firm. It’s always been one of my dreams to work in an environment where I could communicate with foreign co-workers. At the law firm, I can do exactly that and also learn the in’s and out’s of real estate transactions. I am completely satisfied with the experience. After completing my SELC program, I plan to return to South Korea and prepare for employment. My next career goal is to work at a local bank and with my experience gained in Canada, I feel prepared to achieving my next career goal.
In addition to learning the content of the programs, I developed new skills that helped me with my professional and personal life. One example is the communication skills I have acquired. As part of the course we had to do fifteen minute presentation and since I was unaccustomed to speaking for that period of time in public, it brushed up my communication and presentation skills and even gave me tremendous confidence for which I am very thankful.
After the study portion of my program, I moved onto my co-op assignment as a dental assistant at the Imperial Dental Group. At Imperial I basically helped the doctor with everything on a daily basis and I am pleased to say that this co-op experience opened new job opportunities for me to work at dental supply companies. As a result of my SELC College program and co-op, I am now working at the Imperial Dental Group focusing on tasks in the marketing and sales departments.
My experience at SELC was the first step in my journey and I am forever grateful for the confidence it has instilled in my personal and professional life. SELC College is a unique place that offers students the opportunity to meet people from all around the world. One of the biggest advantages for the students is the fact that the staff are super friendly, very supportive, extremely helpful - before, during and long after the program has ended. If there’s anyone out there considering the option to study in Vancouver, I think everyone should give SELC College a try here. I highly endorse and recommend SELC College.
